The quark-gluon plasma at RHIC

چکیده

I present a theory-guided review of RHIC data, arguing that they provide strong evidence for formation of a thermalized quark-gluon plasma at RHIC. Strong radial flow reflects high thermal pressure in the reaction zone. Large elliptic flow proves that the pressure builds up quickly and the system thermalizes on a very short time scale of < 1 fm/c. The observed hadron yields are consistent with statistical hadron formation from a quark-gluon plasma, followed by immediate chemical decoupling due to strong radial expansion. The observed suppression of jets appears to confirm the predicted large energy loss suffered by hard partons moving through a quark-gluon plasma; more work is required to quantitatively understand this effect. Source size measurements using twoparticle correlations do not seem to fit into this picture; the origin of this discrepancy (“HBT puzzle”) is presently not understood.

RHIC and the Quark Gluon Plasma

One of the American Institute of Physics’s top stories of the year 2005 was the discovery of the quark gluon plasma at RHIC. In this paper, the basic theory of the quark gluon plasma is reviewed, and the experimental evidence from RHIC discussed.

J/Ψ suppressions in a thermally equilibrating quark-gluon plasma at RHIC

We estimate the survival probability of J/ψ in relativistic heavy-ion collisions, using both short-distance QCD and nuclear absorption mechanism. The suppression is found to be almost 100 percent for a thermally equilibrating quark-gluon plasma. The measurement of such a huge suppression of J/ψ may suggest the existence of a deconfined partonic medium, possibly a thermalised quark-gluon plasma,...

Discovery of Quark Gluon Plasma at RHIC

Recent experimental results from Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) have shown the evidence of a new state of matter at high energy density. Physicists believe that the new state of matter is "Quark Gluon Plasma"(QGP) that they have been seeking for long time. This paper will survey both theoretical and experimental studies on QGP.

Formation and Evolution of Quark-gluon Plasma at Rhic and Lhc

Initial conditions for quark-gluon plasma formation at τ = 0.1 fm are considered in lowest order perturbative QCD. Chemical composition, thermalization of the formed semihard quark-gluon system and especially implications of the new HERA parton distributions with the enhancement at small x are studied. The plasma at τ = 0.1 fm is shown to be strongly gluon dominated both at RHIC and LHC, and a ...

From Quark - Gluon Plasma to the Perfect Liquid ∗

After reviewing some basic concepts of the theory of strongly interacting matter at above nuclear energy density and reviewing some salient results of the experimental program at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), these lectures explain why the quark-gluon plasma observed in the RHIC experiments has been called a “perfect liquid.” They then give an introduction to some recent ideas con...
